Publication of J.C. Beckett’s The making of modern Ireland in 1966 was a milestone in the modern study of Irish history. A new generation of students have since built on Bechett’s insights and added new questions and problems to the historical agenda. The essays in this book represent the fruits of more recent scholarship. Produced in response to establishment by Four Courts Press of a prize to honour the work of J.C. Bechett, they reflect some of the most important work being undertaken in Irish history today and taken together, chatt some of the areas being developed in the new understanding of how modern was made.
