the Irish as a nation have a reputation for being excessively fond of drink. the drunken Irishman has been a familiar figure in many forms of popular entertainment for two centuries and more. yet despite numerous testament to the Irish fondness for drink, the fact remains that Ireland has witnessed some of the most successful anti-drink campaigns ever conducted. in the late 1830s and 1840s, for example, the Capuchin, father Theobald Mathew, almost single-handedly convinced over half the Irish population to take a pledge of total abstinence. even today Ireland boasts a higher percentage of total abstainers among its people than almost any comparable Western country.
