George Cunningham FSA, M.Litt., MA (h.c. NUI Galway), community activist, lives in his native Roscrea and has authored and edited many books on the Irish midlands and the Burren region of Co Clare. He founded the community publication, Roscrea people, in 1974 and has edited it annually since. He is the founder and director of the Roscrea Conference; the 54th continuous gathering at Mt St Joseph Abbey occurs in April 2014. As founder of both the old Roscrea Society and Roscrea Heritage Society/Centre, he has played an active role in almost every heritage development in his native town for the past forty-five years. He is a former principal of Coolderry Central School (1961 – 1987), and gave public service in many capacities at the University of Limerick over a seventeen year period (1992 – 2009), most notably as chairman of the Library Development Committee and Deputy Chair of the Governing Authority. A noted bibliophile, through the monies generated by Roscrea People, he has donated over 50,000 new books to schools and charitable institutions since 1987. The 50,000th donation was marked in January 2014 by the presentation of the eight volume facsimile set of The Trees of Ireland and 150 relevant heritage volume to Tipperary Public Libraries.
