A Long Lived Wilderness – The Future of the North Midlands Peatland Network – John Feehan
This publication seeks to heighten awareness of the unique opportunity that now exists for the development of a Wilderness Park centered on the Bord na Mona cutaway in the North Midlands.
If this potential is to be realised the community as a whole will need to be behind it. It is our hope that the booklet will help to inform people in a way that awakens their support and enthusiasm for the concept of a Wetlands Wilderness Park.

The booklet owes a great deal to the enthusiasm and dedication over the past several years of Sean Beirne and John Fallon, and the Wetlands Wilderness Park Committee at whose request the study was undertaken. The section on Derrycashel is drawn from an earlier study carried out on behalf of the Committee by Robert Rowlands and myself, and the work carried out by Tom Egan and Stephen Heery for the Longford LEADER Company has been used in the Derraghan case study.
We have leaned heavily on the classic study by Tom Barry and his colleagues for the case studies of both Derrycashel and Derraghan, Bord na Mona have lent their support on many levels, and we are especially grateful to Gerry McNally, Donal Wynne, Tom Egan, Catherine Farrell, Robert Nelson, James McConigley, Val Trodd and Sean Ganly. Our thanks also to the assistance provided by Donal Daly, Jane Coll and Charise McKeon at the Geological Survey of Ireland; Mary Kelleher at the RDS; Tom Moore, Con Brogan and the staff of Corlea Interpretative Centre; Martin Critchley and Jean Byrne of ERA; Michael Casey; and my own colleagues at ERM, Ted Farrell and Florence Renou.
