The 50 Francis Street Photographer – Suzanne Behan
From the 1950s to the 1990s, John Walsh ran his photography business out of a small shop on 50 Francis Street in inner city Dublin.
For over forty years, he took thousands of photographs portraying all aspects of Dublin life.
Here, for the first time, unseen images from the 1950s and 1960s are brought together with the words of his granddaughter Suzanne Behan to give us a unique and nostalgic look at an integral part of a changing city.
From religious processions and Holy Communion days to national events; from family occasions to factory life; from a time when women drank in the snug and the ‘good suit’ came in and out of the pawn shop when needed, The 50 Francis Street Photographer is a collection of stunning, original photographs — a fascinating social history and celebration of people and places through the photographs of Dubliner John Walsh.

Suzanne Behan is the granddaughter of John Walsh, who was known as the 50 Francis Street Photographer. A keen photographer herself, she is in the process of curating the thousands of photographs of Dublin and Ireland which her grandfather took throughout his career, working from his shop on Francis Street. In 2016, she started a Facebook page where she shares some of her grandfather’s photos and where people come together to relive memories of times past. Suzanne lives in Kildare.
